CNR in the face of climate challenges and territorial transformation

The effects of climate change are being felt more intensely, causing upheavals in our uses, resources and economic models. In a changing world, France must conceive the energy, hydraulic and industrial models of 2030 and 2050.

For almost a century, CNR has built a unique model based on a long-term vision, the general interest and sharing value. Backed by the strength of its history, but looking forward to the future, CNR has chosen to act and undergone a profound transformation to open the way towards a carbon-free, resilient and community-based model, to trace the outlines of an energy future equal to the climatic and societal challenges in play.

A clear ambition: preparing the France of 2035 and 2050

Climate change imposes anticipation and the adaptation of our infrastructures, production methods and uses of water and energy: more frequent droughts, more severe floods, conflicts over water resources, increased demand for electricity, the impacts of climate change are many and diverse.

Net zero carbon emissions will be a necessity by 2050: France must reduce its emissions drastically in the next 25 years, adapt its hydraulic systems, guarantee the security of resources and foresee the impacts on the territories.

In this context, CNR has chosen its reason for being: “The Rhone as origin, The territories as partners, Renewable energies as the future,” thereby setting out a clear vision: contributing to the construction of fair, shared and sustainable progress.

Thus, CNR aims to assist energy transition, protect water resources, support the attractiveness of the territories, and prepare the conditions of a model that points decidedly to the future, the France of 2035 and that of 2050.

By implementing its Strategy CNR 2030, it outlines a clear trajectory to respond to the climatic, technological and societal challenges of today and tomorrow.

Opening the way to a fairer, more sustainable, and more resilient model

We not only produce renewable energies, we are the guardians of a water resource, the guarantors of a unique model: that of the long term and the general interest.

CNR’s vision is that of a just progress: carbon free, respectful of life and the territories; of a shared progress: collaborative, redistributive, based on dialogue and consultation; and of a sustainable progress: conceived for future generations by relying on innovation and the heritage of the past.

This vision gives meaning to the strategic choices made and guides transformation towards 2030 and 2050.

CNR 2030: 5 strategic ambitions to transform the company and assist the territories

The strategy with which CNR has equipped itself for 2030, provides the backbone of this transformation. It includes five synergetic ambitions conceived to respond to climatic, energy, technological, and societal challenges.

1. Industrial Rhône

Manage and develop the river as a responsible industrial company with:

Efficient and renewed industrial tools,
Qualified teams trained in the industrial skills deployed,
Operational and available assets (production, navigation, etc.),
The supervision and execution of the works resulting from the extension.

2. Concessionary and territorial development

Act as a committed concessionary alongside the territories to ensure:

The sustainable enhancement of the estate conceded by the government,
The development of river transport and port sites,
That we contribute to the economic development of the territories,
That we assist in overcoming environmental and agricultural challenges,
We are a reference regarding water resources.

3. Developing and marketing REN

Increase renewable electricity production and optimise its sale by:

Developing REN production assets in France,
Making a strong contribution to the solarisation of the Rhone Valley,
Adapting energy sales to the new context,
Dynamizing our aggregation policy.

4. Innovation and energy transition

Innovate in the service of energy transition by:

Deploying storage through green hydrogen and batteries,
Developing the management of intermittent energies,
Carrying out advisability studies on the energies of the future,
Implementing a strategy linked to flexible consumption.

5. Global performance and CSR

Increase the company’s global performance through:

An ambitious CSR policy,
A Safety and Security culture shared by all,
The development of skills and the integration of new talents,
Profitable investments and controlled costs,
Harmonised processes and a more fluid organisation.

Three-year plan 2025-2027: 11 actions to reach our objectives by 2030

Up to 2030, CNR will implement its Strategy through a series of two-year and then three-year plans.

Like the previous plans, the current 3^rd plan is an operational adaptation that should allow reaching the objectives set for 2030. It includes 11 main actions, each supervised by an Executive Committee, and aligned with the major challenges: energy transition, the climate, innovation, performance, internal cohesion and territorial roots.

These actions are:

Make everyone an actor of safety and security,
Structure and strengthen CNR’s performance,
Consolidate the CSR policy and structure CNR’s environmental ambition,
Accelerate the development of RENs,
Increase the flexibility of production assets,
Assert CNR as a driving force of development and territorial attractiveness,
Be the actor of reference of the Rhone’s water resources,
Pursue digital transformation and accelerate digital innovation, including the use of AI,
Build the CNR collective by preserving the DNA of the subsidiaries,
Make CNR an employer of reference,
Imagine CNR in 2050.

These eleven actions are levers of a profound transformation, focused on performance, innovation and transition and conceived to take up the challenges facing the France of 2035 and that of 2050.
