The largest river basin in France, the Rhone acts as a structural corridor for the economy, goods transport, tourism, and pleasure boating.<\/p>\n<p>In its role as the historic developer of the Rhone, CNR ensures the <strong>integrated management of the river, its infrastructures and its different uses<\/strong>. It is part of a <strong>global approach of reconciling the uses to which the Rhone<\/strong> can be put, in the service of goods transport, river tourism and pleasure boating.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-2\" auto-reveal>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                        <p>With <strong>330 kilometres of navigable waterway<\/strong>, the Rhone is equipped with <strong>14 wide-gauge locks<\/strong>, built between 1952 and 1977, allowing the passage of barge convoys up to 190 metres long and carrying up to 4,000 tons, i.e. the equivalent of 220 trucks. This original system <strong>ensures a high level of reliability throughout the year<\/strong> while reducing the impact on navigation.<\/p>\n<p>In parallel, CNR invests in progressively upgrading the equipment, securing systems, improving signalling and optimising lockage time, in order <strong>to maintain an efficient waterway adapted to the requirements of freight companies and river operators<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n    \n                \n\n<section class=\"content-section as--normal-margin as--txt-dark \" >\n            <div class=\"inner-wrap\" reveal>\n            <div class=\"editor-wysiwyg h-mb-40\">\n                <h3 class=\"a-title-3\"><span style=\"color: #239bd7;\">The Navigation Management Centre, a unique tool in France<\/span><\/h3>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-2\" reveal>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                        <p>Since 2012, all the wide-gauge locks have been controlled remotely from the <strong>Navigation Management Centre<\/strong> installed at Ch\u00e2teauneuf-du-Rh\u00f4ne.<\/p>\n<p>Active 24\/7, this unique centre in France ensures permanent monitoring, centralises river traffic management, and guarantees maximum security along the entire navigable waterway.<\/p>\n<p>Using <strong>video-monitoring, VHF and telephone communication systems<\/strong>, it improves information for users, optimises lockage time and guarantees reliable navigation conditions, including during severe hydrological conditions.<\/p>\n\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                                                        <div class=\"editor-img as--rounded\">\n                                    <picture>\n                                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.tm.fr\/app\/uploads\/2025\/12\/CNR_Chateauneuf_Centre_Gestion_Navigation-1-450x450.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n                                    <\/picture>\n                                <\/div>\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n    \n    \n\n<section class=\"content-section as--normal-margin as--txt-dark as--bgcolor\" style=background-color:#68C6DF33>\n            <div class=\"inner-wrap\" reveal>\n            <div class=\"editor-wysiwyg h-mb-40\">\n                <h2 class=\"a-title-2\">Developing river transport and ports to massify flows<\/h2>\n<p>Developing river transport is an important lever for reducing carbon emissions linked to transport. A ton of goods transported by river emits three to four times less CO\u2082 than a ton transported by truck. The Rhone is currently dimensioned to receive up to four times the traffic currently using it without making any major investment on the waterway, thus offering <strong>exceptional development potential<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-2\" reveal>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                                                        <div class=\"editor-img as--rounded\">\n                                    <picture>\n                                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.tm.fr\/app\/uploads\/2025\/12\/CNR_transport_fluvial_routier-450x450.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n                                    <\/picture>\n                                <\/div>\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                        <p>CNR manages <strong>17 industrial and port sites<\/strong> along the river, concentrating 75% of river traffic along the Mediterranean-Rhone-Saone corridor. These platforms form structural multimodal hubs for the companies and industries of the territories, linking the river to rail and road transport.<\/p>\n<p>To increase the river\u2019s attractiveness, CNR acts <strong>to improve the availability and capacity of its river port infrastructures<\/strong>. This requires upgrading port infrastructures, improving public wharfs, optimising lock operations, and creating new docking and waiting points along the Rhone.<\/p>\n\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n    \n                \n\n<section class=\"content-section as--normal-margin as--txt-dark \" >\n            <div class=\"inner-wrap\" reveal>\n            <div class=\"editor-wysiwyg h-mb-40\">\n                <h3 class=\"a-title-3\"><span style=\"color: #239bd7;\">Ports, modernisation and environmental performance<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2024 and 2025, CNR renewed the 4 sub-concessions of the ports of Lyon, Vienne Sud, Portes-l\u00e8s-Valence and Arles, incorporating <strong>ambitious goals regarding increased river traffic and investments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The modernisation works on these 4 ports, contracted with their new operators, represents a total public-private investment of \u20ac80 million, of which \u20ac10 million is financed by the State and \u20ac14 million by CNR.<\/p>\n<p>The goal:<strong> improve handling, strengthen rail links and develop rail-river synergy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-2\" reveal>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                                                        <div class=\"editor-img as--rounded\">\n                                    <picture>\n                                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.tm.fr\/app\/uploads\/2025\/12\/CNR_Port_de_Lyon_fluvial_ferroviaire-450x450.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n                                    <\/picture>\n                                <\/div>\n                                                                                                                <p>These are all actions that participate in massifying flows, reducing logistics costs and improving signalling in favour of river transport, thereby reinforcing the competitiveness of supply chains. In the Rhone Valley, the<strong> transfer of a share of the goods to massified transport modes<\/strong> such as river and rail transport should allow withdrawing 120,000 tuck a year from the road network.<\/p>\n\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                                                        <div class=\"editor-img as--rounded\">\n                                    <picture>\n                                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.tm.fr\/app\/uploads\/2025\/12\/CNR_tourisme_fluvial_borne_de_recharge_electrique-450x450.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n                                    <\/picture>\n                                <\/div>\n                                                                                                                <p>Lastly, CNR is speeding up the \u00a0energy transition of the river fleet, by supporting the evolution of motorisation through the Modernisation and Innovation Aid Plan (PAMI) of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vnf.fr\/vnf\/\">Voies Navigables de France<\/a> (VNF) and by deploying <strong>green energy supply infrastructures at the wharves<\/strong>, in particular high power electricity terminals that enable freight barges and river cruisers to charge their batteries without requiring combustion engines when docked.<\/p>\n\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n    \n    \n\n<section class=\"content-section as--normal-margin as--txt-dark as--bgcolor\" style=background-color:#68C6DF33>\n            <div class=\"inner-wrap\" reveal>\n            <div class=\"editor-wysiwyg h-mb-40\">\n                <h2 style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Including navigation and port development in the dynamics of the Mediterranean-Rhone-Saone corridor (MeRS)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>CNR is fully committed to the development of the \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.tm.fr\/activites\/navigation-et-developpement-portuaire\/axe-mediterranee-rhone-saone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MeRS\u00a0corridor<\/a>\u201d, <\/strong>the major logistic artery linking Lyon to Marseilles and the true point pf entry into France and the rest of Europe from the south. This commitment is part of collective movement bringing together the State, the territories, infrastructure managers and business actors, with a shared goal: <strong>that of making the waterway a lever for decarbonation, transport massification and reindustrialisation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>CNR acts throughout the supply chain: developing port infrastructures and services, offering industrial properties and optimising links between river, rail and maritime transport, especially with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marseille-port.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Port de Marseille-Fos<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-2\" reveal>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                                                        <div class=\"editor-img as--rounded\">\n                                    <picture>\n                                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.tm.fr\/app\/uploads\/2025\/12\/CNR_transport_fluvial_fret_ports_Rhone-450x450.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n                                    <\/picture>\n                                <\/div>\n                                                                                                                <p>This dynamic evolution is structured by the <strong>Rhone-Saone-\u00d4rizon 2035 corridor plan<\/strong> that sets out the <strong>common road map for river freight and tourism<\/strong>.
