The aim is to give back to the river a more natural morphology in targeted areas so that it can express its natural and ecological momentum.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last 25 years, CNR has worked with the State, the Rhone-Mediterranean-Corsica Water Agency, local authorities and the scientific community to increase the discharges of the by-passed sectors of the Rhone, called the \u201cVieux Rh\u00f4ne\u201d, and reconnect the river to its secondary branches, the oxbows. These operations diversify habitats propitious for fauna and flora, therefore the river\u2019s biodiversity. By strengthening the ecological functioning of the different habitats that make up the river, they participate in increasing its resilience to climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Up to now, these operations have led to the restoration of more than 120 kilometres of river and the emergence of more dynamic ecosystems, characterised by the return of animal and plant species typical of major flowing rivers. This progressive approach relies on in-the-field knowledge, local consultation, the structural role of floods and continuous scientific monitoring. These mechanisms generate a mosaic of habitats favourable for animal and plant species.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-2\" auto-reveal>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                       <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                        <p>The works and dikes erected at the end of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century to facilitate river transport participated in \u201ccorseting\u201d the river, and combined with the hydroelectric developments built in the second half of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, progressively degraded and uniformised the habitats composing it, negatively impacting biodiversity. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ecological restoration programme carried out by CNR is aimed at returning space to the Rhone, reconnecting the main channel of the river to its associated wetlands and favouring natural erosion processes that sustain biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>It is fully integrated in the European Framework Directive on Water which pursues several objectives to reach a good ecological state of water bodies.<\/p>\n\n     \n\n<section class=\"content-section as--normal-margin as--txt-dark \" >\n            <div class=\"inner-wrap\" reveal>\n            <div class=\"editor-wysiwyg h-mb-40\">\n                <p>The results are there to see: the scientific monitoring project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhoneco.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rh\u00f4nEco<\/a>\u00a0has already shown the diversification of habitats and the return of the river\u2019s characteristic animal species such as the grayling, pike, barbel, beaver and kingfisher.<\/p>\n<p>These actions are completed by the ecological management of the banks: \u201czero phytosanitary products\u201d, selective mowing, the combat against invasive species.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, local consultation is aimed at ensuring implementation in phase with the uses and expectations of the territories.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-0\" reveal>\n class=\"inner-wrap\" reveal>\n            <div class=\"editor-wysiwyg h-mb-40\">\n                <h2>CNR\u2019s ecological restoration programme is:<\/h2>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-2\" reveal>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                        <ul>\n<li>120 km of river restored since 1998, i.e. nearly 1\/4 of the French Rhone, between increasing discharges and relinking oxbows;<\/li>\n<li>More than \u20ac100 million invested since 2000 with considerable aid from the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eaurmc.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agence de l&#8217;eau Rh\u00f4ne M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e Corse<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Old structures demolished to give the river back its space;<\/li>\n<li>Thousands of m<sup>3<\/sup> of sediments put in movement to regenerate natural habitats;<\/li>\n<li>Secondary branches reopened or created,<\/li>\n<li>Recreation of wetlands and spawning grounds;<\/li>\n<li>Continuous scientific monitoring<\/li>\n<li>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhoneco.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rh\u00f4nEco<\/a> et <a href=\"https:\/\/observatoire-sediments-rhone.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OSR \u2013 January 2025, CNR has carried out major restoration works on the banks of the Rhone at the junction of the municipalities of Irigny, Vernaison and Feyzin to refill the second ary branches of the river with water, and recreate wetlands propitious for biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-2\" reveal>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                        <p>More than 4 kilometres of rockfill and spur dikes built in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century were removed to free the alluvial banks where gravel and silt had accumulated over the years.<\/p>\n<p>The operation should end in 2028 to permit the return of water to 5 kilometres of oxbows and secondary branches, as well as create 6 islets and nearly 8 hectares of ponds and wetlands.<\/p>\n<p>It is one of the largest operations of this type undertaken by CNR on the Rhone since the launching of its ecological restoration programme.<\/p>\n\n                          <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                        <p>A second very large site started at the beginning of 2026 for a scheduled duration of 6 years on the Rhone at Vion and Chambon in Ardeche (slightly upstream of Tournon-sur-Rh\u00f4ne): 2.4 km of dikes removed, 2 km of oxbows reopened including a branch with a width varying between 50 and 80 m and a project for an aquatic reedbed of 6 hectares!<\/p>\n<p>This restoration will complete other works performed between 2020 and 2027 on the Rhone at Baix, further downstream.<\/p>\n\n
