It entails the partial lowering of the forebay of the hydropower dam of Verbois. Carried out by SIG, it includes measures taken by the operator of the dam of Chancy-Pougny and CNR. The aim of this <strong>French-Swiss management <\/strong>is to get as much of the sediments to transit (within the limit of 1.5 million m<sup>3<\/sup>) to the Mediterranean Sea while <strong>preserving the environment and the biodiversity of the river<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n    \n    \n\n<section class=\"content-section as--normal-margin as--txt-dark as--bgcolor\" style=background-color:#68C6DF33>\n            <div class=\"inner-wrap\" reveal>\n            <div class=\"editor-wysiwyg h-mb-40\">\n                <h3 class=\"a-title-3\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #239bd7;\">What is sediment management?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It entails <strong>operations such as dredging, releases of water, <\/strong>etc. to ensure that the quantity of sediments present in a river remains compatible with the environment (impacts on the fauna and flora, etc.).<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-0\" reveal>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n    \n                \n\n<section class=\"content-section as--normal-margin as--txt-dark \" >\n            <div class=\"inner-wrap\" reveal>\n            <div class=\"editor-wysiwyg h-mb-40\">\n                <h2 style=\"margin: 0cm; line-height: normal;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">CNR takes care of the river and its environment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>CNR uses<strong>\u00a0exceptional human and technical resources<\/strong> to carry out this operation efficiently. CNR acts in close cooperation with the Services industriels de Gen\u00e8ve (SIG), and under the control of the Swiss and French administrative authorities, in compliance with several inter-prefectural rulings.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-2\" reveal>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                                                        <div class=\"editor-img as--rounded\">\n                                    <picture>\n                                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.tm.fr\/app\/uploads\/2019\/10\/CMOIRENC_073826barrage-centrale-de-Gnissiat-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n                                    <\/picture>\n                                <\/div>\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                        <p>In parallel with lowering the forebays of the Swiss dams, CNR almost simultaneously <strong>begins progressively lowering the level of its six forebays located between G\u00e9nissiat and Sault-Br\u00e9naz<\/strong>, with specific lowering operation intended to maintain <strong>water quality compatible with fish life and biodiversity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These operations are carried out to increase water flow velocity to ensure the transfer of the sediments.<\/p>\n\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"content-section\">\n    <div class=\"inner-wrap\">\n                    <div class=\"editor-img\" reveal>\n                <figure role=\"figure\" aria-label=\"\">\n                                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.tm.fr\/app\/uploads\/2021\/05\/schemas_apaver-1024x590.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2097\" height=\"1209\" loading=\"lazy\">\n                    <figcaption><\/figcaption>\n                <\/figure>\n            <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n    \n    \n\n<section class=\"content-section as--normal-margin as--txt-dark as--bgcolor\" style=background-color:#68C6DF33>\n            <div class=\"inner-wrap\" reveal>\n            <div class=\"editor-wysiwyg h-mb-40\">\n                <h3 class=\"a-title-3\"><span style=\"color: #239bd7;\">Limiting the impacts: CNR\u2019s priority<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>CNR organises a series of technical and visual monitoring procedures and adopts environmental measures to <strong>lessen the effects of the sediment management operations on aquatic habitats<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These monitoring activities are performed jointly with the French and Swiss authorities, local anglers (angling associations, AAPPMA, professional fishers) and CNR\u2019s partners (Rhone Sediment Observatory, nature consultancies, environmental associations, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-2\" reveal>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                        <h3 class=\"a-title-3\"><span style=\"color: #239bd7;\">Controlling suspended matter (SM)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Throughout the operations and 24\/7,\u00a0<strong>CNR monitors the turbidity of the water <\/strong>at a series of sampling points and measurement sites distributed along the Upper Rhone. The aim is to avoid exceeding the maximum suspended matter values defined beforehand by the authorities. Aquatic fauna can be affected if the particle concentrations are too high.<\/p>\n\n                                                                                                                <h3 class=\"a-title-3\"><span style=\"color: #239bd7;\">Monitoring water quality and evaluating the quality of microplastics in the sediments<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Besides the rate of suspended matter, CNR works with the INRAE and ENTPE to <strong>evaluate the quantities of microplastics in the sediments<\/strong>. It also <strong>controls other water quality indicators<\/strong> in close collaboration with scientific experts such as temperature, pH, toxicology, oxygen rate, ammonia rate, bacteriology, and so forth.<\/p>\n\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                        <h3 class=\"a-title-3\"><span style=\"color: #239bd7;\">Preserving the bypassed sections of the Rhone<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The natural sections of the Rhone of Chautagne, Belley and Br\u00e9gnier-Cordon have undergone major restoration and ecological works. The presence of suspended matter leads to a change in colour and aspect of the water. It becomes darker, between brown and grey.<\/p>\n<p>An unusual odour may emanate from the river in some places.
