It is controllable 24\/7: production can be increased or reduced according to need and programmed with precise forecasting.<\/p>\n<p>The energy transition expertise centre of the European Commission has evaluated <strong>the potential of osmotic energy exploitable for the European Union at 50.8 TWh\/year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                                                        <div class=\"editor-img as--rounded\">\n                                    <picture>\n                                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.tm.fr\/app\/uploads\/2025\/12\/CNR_technologie_energie_osmotique-450x450.png\" alt=\"\">\n                                    <\/picture>\n                                <\/div>\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n    \n    \n\n<section class=\"content-section as--normal-margin as--txt-dark as--bgcolor\" style=background-color:#68C6DF33>\n            <div class=\"inner-wrap\" reveal>\n            <div class=\"editor-wysiwyg h-mb-40\">\n                <h3 class=\"a-title-3\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #239bd7;\">How does it work?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The salt contained in seawater is composed of <strong>two chemical elements<\/strong>: sodium (NA+) with a positive electric charge, and chlorine (CL-) with a negative electric charge. When saltwater and freshwater come into contact, sodium and chlorine ions diffuse naturally and their concentration balances throughout the volume of water.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Placing a <strong>semi-permeable membrane between freshwater and saltwater<\/strong> allows controlling this diffusion and generating an ionic current, a phenomenon called osmosis, that can then be transformed into an electric current.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetch.energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sweetch Energy<\/a>\u00a0has developed the <strong>technology called INOD\u00ae<\/strong>, a new type of bio-sourced ion exchanger membrane that should lead to the development of large-scale osmotic energy generation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-0\" reveal>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n    \n                \n\n<section class=\"content-section as--normal-margin as--txt-dark \" >\n            <div class=\"inner-wrap\" reveal>\n            <div class=\"editor-wysiwyg h-mb-40\">\n                <h2>A modelling phase and technical tests<\/h2>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-2\" reveal>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                                                        <div class=\"editor-img as--rounded\">\n                                    <picture>\n                                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.tm.fr\/app\/uploads\/2025\/12\/CNR_energie_osmotique_ecluse_Barcarin_2-450x450.png\" alt=\"\">\n                                    <\/picture>\n                                <\/div>\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                        <p>CNR provides Sweetch Energy with its technical expertise in energies and its knowledge of the river to develop an osmotic energy demonstrator in the Rhone delta.<\/p>\n<p>It is carrying out the first phase of <strong>modelling the demonstrator<\/strong> in CESAME, its hydraulics laboratory, and is making available an <strong>advantageous site<\/strong> on its concession at the lock of Barcarin to test the technology under real operating conditions.<\/p>\n\n                                                                                                                                    <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n    \n                \n\n<section class=\"content-section as--normal-margin as--txt-dark \" >\n            <div class=\"inner-wrap\" reveal>\n            <div class=\"editor-wysiwyg h-mb-40\">\n                <h2>An environmentally friendly power plant<\/h2>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"inner-wrap \">\n        <div class=\"as--column as--columns-2\" reveal>\n                            <div class=\"as--column__item editor-wysiwyg h-align-left\">\n                                                                                                        <p>This small-scale osmotic power plant is integrated in <strong>two containers<\/strong>. They house the osmotic generator linked to the Rhone by pipes and pumps to convey the freshwater and saltwater required for its operation. A third conduit is used to evacuate the resulting mixture into the area of the maritime canal where the freshwater and saltwater come into contact downstream of the lock.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the water entering the demonstrator is filtered before circulating in the osmotic generator. It is then completely restored to the natural environment without any pollutant discharge.<\/p>\n\n
